Youth Olympic Games 2010 - Singapore

The world first-ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is currently held in Singapore from 14th to 26th August 2010.

Being the host of this important event, the whole country has done a lot to welcome guest from all over the world. Even in schools, teachers and principles talk a lot about it. Attached photo is a booklet which was given to my 2 kids by their school. It has details for the games planned for each day.

Although I am not hopeful that Singapore will be able to achieve the top 3 positions (overall results), I was hoping that the Singapore team would obtain Gold medal for the football competition. However, our national team was beaten by Haiti in the semi-final match! I was not discouraged because, as I watched the game, I could feel that our home team has really played all their hearts out and the competition was simply too strong.

Table tennis (girls single) was another possible Gold medal for Singapore. On the night of the final game, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife was also on the event to cheer our player. Once again, it was too tough for Isabelle Li to take on the top seed opponent from China. She ended achieving Singapore’s second silver medal.

I must say all the Singapore participants have practiced hard and tried their best in all the games. Being a citizen of a young and small country, I am extremely pride of all the them and would think that given more time and practice, they would be able to achieve better results next round.

Work harder and we’ll be move a step closer to our target, Singapore team!

Best-of-the-best garden in Singapore

Hi Friends,

Yesterday, I had a chance to visit a Japanese MNC in eastern part of Singapore. What’s interesting about this company is that it has a rooftop garden. It is actually a ‘dry’ garden of drought-resistant plants and a collection of herb, fruits and vegetable plots.

The garden is managed by a team of gardening club members, comprising of company’s staff and Managers. They would normally clock voluntary overtime – either coming in early, staying back after work or returning on weekends to attend to the plants and the place.
At times, members gather to harvest their crop (eg sweet potatoes) they have planted.  I think such partnership between employers and employees in the greening of the workplace is an ideal way to achieve ‘win-win’ situation between the two parties.

In fact, we were told that the garden has won them a gold award at a nationwide gardening contest – Community in Bloom, which is organized once every two years by the National Parks Board (NParks). To me, Singapore is termed as a Garden City and visiting this rooftop garden is like seeing the best-of-the-best garden in Singapore!

Strong Economy

“Singapore economy chalked up an impressive 18.8 per cent growth in the second quarter of this year ….. MTI (Ministry of Trade and Industry) maintained its forecast that the local economy will grow between 13 and 15 per cent on the whole year, possibly making Singapore the fastest-growing economy in the world”.

When I read the above statements from local publication – mypaper (dated 11 August 2010), my heart beat faster! I was thinking - Singapore is just a tiny little red dot on the world map and it is able to achieve such amazing results within such a short time is truly unbelievable.

Well, I am very blessed to be born and being brought up in this country. I hope that anyone who shares the same feelings as me to continue to put in our individual effort to contribute to this country and also make this place a most livable place to stay.

National Day parade (NDP) 2010

Hi everyone,

I just came back from the Singapore 2010 National Day Parade (NDP 2010) conducted at Padang. I felt so strongly that I need to create a blog quickly to express my sincere thanks to Singapore after attending this event (with my family). The feeling I got, as part of the crowd, is totally unbelievable! Words like – togetherness, discipline, determination, perseverance, creativity, unity, commitment, harmony, dedication …. came to my mind while watching. (Photos you see on this post are some shots taken at the event).

From now on, I will use this blog to share more interesting topics and/or happenings that have taken place in Singapore.

I hope that those who have not been to this lovely country to visit us one day. I also hope to get to know more people who have the same passion as me i.e. to invite as many people from different part of the world to visit and have some fun here.

Stay tune. I will do my best to share the best of Singapore with you soon!
